Daily Update for Sept. 26 and the Weekend

      • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area will host a public “star party” tonight for park visitors to view planets, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies through telescopes. Hill Country Astronomers, the local astronomy club, will provide the telescopes. The gathering will begin around 7:30 p.m. as the sun goes down and the observing will begin at 8:45 p.m. or so, as it grows completely dark. 

     • The archery-only season for both turkey and white-tailed deer opens this Saturday in Gillespie County and continues through Oct. 31.

      • The Albert Community Club will meet for a clean-up at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Williams Creek School No. 7 in Albert. Those attending need to help clean, mow, weed eat and do other chores. A brief meeting and lunch will follow.

      • The City of Fredericksburg Police Department will take part in the National Drug Take Back Program on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gillespie County Law Enforcement Center. Law enforcement officials will accept any prescription or non-prescription drug. After the event, the Drug Enforcement Agency will pick up the drugs from FPD and destroy them. There will be a drive-through drop-off at this location.

      • The Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site at Stonewall will host a Farm Demonstration Day on Saturday at the Sauer Beckmann Living History Farm from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Period-dressed park ranger interpreters will demonstrate traditions of a 1915 German farm family, including the making of lye soap, rope making and the washing of clothes.

     • The region’s top high school marching bands will perform their 2014 contest shows on Saturday in the annual Hill Country Marching Festival in the FHS Stadium beginning at 12:30 p.m. and continuing every 15 minutes. The FHS Marching Band will not be competing but will march its University Interscholastic League contest show in exhibition around 11:30 a.m. The Harper High School Band is expected to march at 1:45 p.m.

     • The Annual Homecoming Worship Service at St. John Lutheran Church at Crabapple will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The Rev. Karl Biermann from St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cuero will deliver the sermon. Following the morning worship service, a chicken barbecue meal will be served in the Crabapple Community Center Hall. Families attending are asked to bring a side dish and/or dessert to accompany the meal. Tableware and drinks will be furnished. 

     • A “Pizza for a Purpose” fundraiser to benefit Wounded Warriors at Nebo will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday at West End Pizza Company. During that time, there will be a pizza buffet by donation, a prize drawing, door prizes, silent auction and T-shirt sales.

     • The Optimist Club of Fredericksburg is inviting boys and girls ages six to 15 years to participate in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Fredericksburg High School Stadium. Registration opens at 1 p.m.

      • Fredericksburg Little League will hold its annual meeting at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Central Texas Electric Cooperative meeting room. The meeting is being held to elect new board members.

       • Fredericksburg High School varsity football will be traveling to La Grange tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game.

     • In football action on Thursday night, the FHS JV lost to La Grange, 32-14, and the freshmen lost, 26-7.

      • FHS volleyball will be traveling to Bandera tonight where the varsity will play at 4:30 p.m. and the freshmen and JV will play at 6 p.m. The freshmen and JV will playing in the Smithson Valley Tournament on Saturday.

     • Fredericksburg High School, Fredericksburg Middle School, Harper High School and Harper Middle School cross country teams will all compete in the Fredericksburg Invitational on Saturday at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park. The JV boys run at 8:30 a.m., the varsity boys at 9 a.m., the JV girls at 9:30 a.m., the varsity girls at 10 a.m., the seventh graders at 10:30 a.m. and the eighth graders at 11 a.m.

      • The FHS varsity tennis team will be playing in Mason on Saturday. They will take on Abilene Wylie at 9 a.m. and Mason at 1 p.m.

      • Fredericksburg Middle School seventh and eighth grade A and B volleyball teams will be playing int he Dripping Springs Tournament on Saturday.

     • Harper High School varsity football will be in Johnson City for a 7:30 p.m. game tonight.

     • Harper volleyball will also be in Johnson City tonight. The JV plays at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5 p.m.

      • Heritage School football will host Medina tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • Heritage varsity volleyball will host Cornerstone at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

     • Heritage Logic volleyball will be playing in the Hill Country Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

      • St. Mary's football will play St. Matthew at home on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
