Hunting season will soon be upon Gillespie County as the archery-only season for both turkey and white-tailed deer opens this Saturday.

Archery season for both will run until Oct. 31. Gillespie is one of 149 Texas counties with an archery-only season for turkey.

The bag limit for white-tailed deer this season is five (no more than two bucks, all seasons combined). For turkeys, the bag limit is four, no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey.

Overall, the whitetail deer antlers look “not bad,” according to local game warden Scott Krueger with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

“This time of year, they’re pretty regular where they go and where they feed,” Krueger said. “I’ve seen as many good bucks as much as what I’d call ‘scrubs.’”

Krueger added that the body sizes for the deer are average with some looking “slick and fat” and some looking skinny.

It’s looking to be a dry weekend. According to Accuweather.com, Fredericksburg’s high temperatures this weekend should reach 83 degrees with lows at 60 degrees.

The rifle season for white-tailed deer and turkey will open Saturday, Nov. 1 and run until Jan. 4, 2015.

A special youth-only season for the white-tailed deer will run in two segments: Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 25-26 and then from Jan. 5-18, 2015 (both genders).
