
News • Fredericksburg High School is celebrating Homecoming 2015 this week, and activities culminate tonight with the FHS varsity football game at 7:30 p.m. against Burnet, crowning of the Homecoming Queen and King at half-time and a dance. Homecoming Queen nominees are Mackenzie Grumbles, Sloane Guthrie, Taylor Husfeld, Katherine McManigle and Tatum Tanner. King nominees are Cole Bourgeois, Zane Brown, Zach DeLeon, Christian Montgomery, son of Erwin and Amy Montgomery, and Kyle Reeh. A pep rally was held this morning. • Fredericksburg Rotary Club will host the Fredericksburg High School Homecoming Scholarship Party from 4-7:30 p.m. today at FHS with a festival-like atmosphere, food and games. Booths will be set up featuring food trucks, face painting, dunking booths (with surprise guests), a blocking sled push challenge, obstacle course and bounce castle kids’ area, a first responders 9/11 salute and more. The party also will feature a “Sledge-A-Car” activity where five $1 tickets will buy five whacks with a sledgehammer at the “Beat Burnet” automobile donated by Eckert Wrecking. Food trucks and vendors include Gatti’s Pizza, Clear River Pecan sandwiches and the Hill Country Memorial cafeteria. There is no entry fee, but food truck meals are $10 and cash and credit donations will be accepted at the ticket booth. There also will be “tips for scholarships” jars at several places. • Harper Wildlife Management Area members will conduct the group’s first spotlight deer census survey on public roads in western Gillespie County and eastern Kimble County tonight through Sunday. • The 2015 Texas Hill Country Dorper Association Ninth Annual Show and Sale will be held today and Saturday in the Show Barn at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. More than 170 entries are participating in the state’s largest consignment of Dorper and White Dorper sheep sale. The sale is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., Saturday Other activities include an educational seminar, meeting and judging of all haltered classes and opening ceremonies beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday. • Porsches — approximately 130 of them — will be in town today through Sunday for the 18th Annual Boxstoberfest convention at the Hangar Hotel. Mayor Linda Langerhans will attend and offer a proclamation, and the Bill Smallwood Band will provide entertainment. Events include wine and Hill Country tours today, car show at 8 a.m. on Saturday followed by tours of the Hill Country and a dinner and dance on Saturday evening. • Fredericksburg Independent School District Community Education will offer a hunter’s education course on Saturday and Sunday. Individuals will need their Social Security number when registering. Participants are asked to bring a pencil to class. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday. • A Quilt Show and Auction fundraiser will be held on Saturday at the Adelsverein Halle on Marktplatz. The event is hosted by the Willow City Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department firefighters, medical first responders and auxiliary members. Quilts of various sizes, colors and styles will be on display from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Bidder registration will also begin during the viewing. • The 2015 Freescale Central Texas Tour de Cure will ride into town on Saturday and Sunday. This bicycle race is the American Diabetes Association’s signature fundraising cycling event. Jellystone Park will serve as the ride headquarters. In the Central Texas tour of this race, riders will cycle from Austin to Fredericksburg on Saturday and return on Sunday. • The Texas Rangers Heritage Center will host John Arthur Martinez and Mike Blakely for a “songwriter in the round” concert with a catered barbecue from CalBob’s tonight. Joining Martinez and Blakely will be musicians Duke Davis, Larry Nye and Kurt Baumer. This is the first of a series of monthly concerts the Texas Rangers Heritage Center will present. Tickets are $20 and include the meal and concert with a beverage cash bar. A special event will be presented Saturday starting with a catered meal at the Texas Rangers Heritage Center Pavilion. A theatrical musical play, “Guardian of the Texas Frontier,” will follow the meal. The play will be held at Fort Martin Scott, featuring Pierre Minjauw as Lt. Col. Martin Scott. Tickets are $25 and include the meal and play with a beverage cash bar. • “Competitive shopping” is on the schedule Saturday as the 12th Annual Shopping Tournament will be in in Fredericksburg, Several stores will have preview parties on Friday. Teams of up to four shoppers begin with an 8:30 a.m. “Tee Time” breakfast. The shopping begins at 10 a.m., and they will find food, beverages, spirited and friendly sales staffs and discounts in participating stores. Shoppers finish the day at the “19th Hole Celebration.” The event is an annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Fredericksburg. • A performance by “St. Paul Speaks,” will be offered at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Phillip Smith of “St. Paul Speaks” in Leander will speak to the audience from a Roman prison where he is “in chains for Christ.” • A Sweet September Sorghum program will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm in the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. Costumed interpreters will demonstrate how sorghum syrup was made 100 years ago on the farm. • Cherry Spring School will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There is no admission fee to tour the school and premises. Docents will be available to tell the stories of the school. Light refreshments will be available. Cherry Spring Community Club’s annual picnic and potluck supper will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Cherry Spring School and Community Center. Activities include fellowship, “42” dominoes and other games with the potluck meal starting at 5:30 p.m. Drinks, plates and utensils will be furnished. • The annual Grapetown Family Picnic will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the schoolhouse. Practice shooting will begin at 1 p.m., and the barbecue will be served at 6 p.m. Officials ask that members bring their own side dishes. • Radio station KNAF will broadcast New Horizons’ 27th Radiothon from 4-10 p.m. on Saturday on 910 KNAF-AM. Local and area bands will play live at the station, while people from both KNAF and New Horizons will work phone lines, asking for donations. Proceeds will go to New Horizons, which provides individualized services to adults with developmental challenges. • Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park continues its outdoor summertime movie series on Saturday with the screening of “The Sound of Music” at the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall. The film starts at dusk and will be presented on a large outdoor screen. Access to the ranch begins at 6:30 p.m. A movie trivia contest will precede the film, with prizes being awarded to the winners. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments. The program is free of charge. • The Fredericksburg Chorale will present a Dialogues and Dances concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Hill Country University Center. The performance will showcase original and old works by the members of the Chorale as well as improvisations. • Some of the sport’s top riders and best bulls will be at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday night for the Sixth Annual Fredericksburg PBR (Professional Bull Riders). Approximately 35 professional bull riders are expected to compete in the event, sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the professional bull riding starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $20, reserved seats are $25 and box seats are $40. Tickets for children (ages six to 12), active military and EMS personnel are $10. There will also be mutton busting for youth. • The Lower South Grape Creek School barbecue fundraiser will be this weekend at 10273 U.S. 290 East. The event will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday continue until sold it. Officials suggest a $10 donation for the barbecued chicken meal with all the trimmings. • Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonewall will host its annual Rally Day and barbecue on Sunday. Rally Day will begin with Sunday school for all ages at 9 a.m., followed by worship services at 10:10 a.m. A barbecue meal will be served in the Fellowship Hall, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plates-to-go will be available in the drive-thru line. The cost of the meal will be by free-will donation. • Art lovers can bike to three artists’ studios within Fredericksburg’s city limits with local art consultant and American Youth Hostel certified bike tour leader Sherryl Brown from 1-3:30 p.m. on Sunday. There is no charge for the tour but it is limited to 20 bikers for safety reasons. Participants will visit the studios of Marion Loucks, John Austin Hanna and Joyce Combs. Biking distance is 4.5 miles. Participants will meet at 12:45 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Bikers must wear a helmet and bring water. Children over 14 years of age are welcome to attend. • Pecan Creek Community Club will meet Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at 3410 Pecan Creek Road. Following a short business meeting, they will play games of “42” dominoes and cards. Members are asked to bring snacks or desserts and drinks of their choice. Officials will provide barbecue spare ribs. • A patriotic program titled, “God and Country: A Musical Tribute,” will be presented on Sunday by the Canto Chamber Choir. The 3 p.m. concert will be performed in the Nimitz Ballroom at the National Museum of the Pacific War. Adult admission is $20 and $5 for students, checks and cash only. • The Hill Country Film Society will host its next free “indie screening series” event with “Dancer, Texas Pop. 81” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Fritztown Cinema. • The TubaMeisters will wrap up the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance’s Marktplatz Concert Series season when they perform Sunday at the Adelsverein Halle on Marktplatz. Admission is free, and the concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Attendees can bring their lawn chairs, a picnic meal and friends. Sports • Fredericksburg High School varsity football will play its Homecoming game tonight against Burnet in the FHS Stadium. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. • Fredericksburg High School, Fredericksburg Middle School, Harper High School, Harper Middle School and Heritage School cross country teams will run in the Jacob Krebs Invitational at Harper High School on Saturday, Junior high girls run at 9 a.m. followed by the junior high boys at 9:30 a.m., the high school boys at 10 a.m. and the high school girls at 10:30 a.m. • The FHS varsity tennis team will play Schertz Steele at Steele High School on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. They will play Schertz Clemens at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Clemens High School. • FHS freshmen and JV volleyball teams will continue play in the Wimberley Tournament on Saturday. • Harper High School varsity football will host Ingram tonight at 7:30 p.m. • Harper volleyball will host Junction tonight beginning with the freshmen and JV at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5 p.m. • Heritage High School football will host Our Lady of the Hills Kerrville at 7:30 p.m. tonight. • Heritage volleyball will continue play in the Castle Hills Varsity Tournament on Saturday. • Heritage Junior High volleyball will play in the Heritage Tournament on Saturday at First Baptist Church Gym. • Fredericksburg Golf Association will meet on Sunday at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course.
