By Matt Ward —

City and county officials may be close to striking a deal over a land-for-paving swap, but there’s a problem: the waiting game.

Both the Gillespie County Commissioners and Fredericksburg City Council have tabled the issue at their most recent meetings while waiting for the other side to make an offer.

Gillespie County owns eight acres along Barons Creek across from H-E-B and Old Fair Park, awarded to the county in a district court ruling in 1920, which was subsequently filed away and forgotten.

City Manager Kent Myers said Monday evening during the council’s regular meeting that city officials expect the county to present a proposal in the near future.

Advocating for the council to take no action on land swap discussions, Myers said he believed “the county is working on something that they want to present to us at some point.”

The council had agreed to offer one-time-only paving services at Nimitz Parkway for an estimated $42,000 in exchange for the property at their April 20 meeting.

Reached via email early Tuesday afternoon, County Judge Mark Stroeher said commissioners had yet to receive a formal offer from the city for the property.
