Daily Update for Oct. 3 and the Weekend

News

     • The Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce's annual member-guest “Greens & Grapes” Golf Tournament, gets underway this morning at 9 a.m. at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Course with the "Greens" portion of the two-day event. On Saturday, players, plus one guest each, will be treated to the “Grapes” portion of the event with a special behind-the-scenes tour at an area winery or bourbon distillery.

     • The VFW Post 7105 will host a Women Veterans Recognition Coffee at 9:30 a.m. today at Heritage Place Assisted Living. All female military veterans are invited.

     • Fourteen galleries are offering special events, demonstrations, receptions and more today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as part of First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg.

      • Willow City Community Club will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Willow City School Building and Community Center. Officials encourage members to bring finger foods and snacks for the light meal to be served at 7 p.m. A short business meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by games of “42” dominoes and socializing.

     • The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park will show The Beatles’ movie “A Hard Day’s Night” tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the LBJ Ranch as part of the park's “Movies Under the Stars” program. Prior to the movie, the entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. when The Eggmen from Austin will play the first of two sets running 50 minutes apiece.

      • Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg opens tonight and continues through Sunday with three days of singing, toasting and dancing on Martkplatz. Oktoberfest hours are from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, from 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $1 for children 7-12, and free for children under six. Two-day passes are $12, and three-day passes are $16.

     • Runners and walkers will be stepping off on Saturday morning as part of the Fredericksburg Morning Rotary Club’s 5th Annual Kraut Run/Walk 8K. Race-day registration and check in will start at 7 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. at the entrance to Fredericksburg Middle School on Travis Street. A post-race party will be held, featuring Opa’s sausage, Lobo beer and Kelani Yogürt.

      Early packet pickup and registration will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at Jack and Adam’s Bicycle Shop at 206 South Lincoln Street.

      • St. Joseph’s Halle Craft Show will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Joseph's Halle. There is no charge for admission to the craft show.

      • Holy Ghost Lutheran Church will hold its annual church picnic on Sunday at Pioneer Pavilion in Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, and will feature “The Jesus Painter.” Activities begin at 9:15 a.m. with a Sunday School Spirit Rally for children and youth of all ages. The public is invited. Glen Treibs will offer one of his “Pioneer Church History” presentations for the adults. An informal worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. with the “Joyful Noise” Praise Group leading the music.Following the worship service, there will be a barbecue and covered dish meal. All are encouraged to bring their own plates and utensils to be “creation-friendly.” Games, bounce house, bubble ball, bingo, dominoes, snow cones and fellowship will round out the afternoon.

     • The Hullaballoo Golf Tournament will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Gillespie County Texas A&M Scholarship Fund.

      • Fredericksburg author Linda Kay will release the first of a quintet of books titled “Annie’s Love” from AuthorHouse, and will hold a book-signing event from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at 203 Heritage Hills Drive.

      • Crabapple Community Club will meet at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Crabapple School. Games of 42 dominoes will be played, followed by a short business meeting.

Sports

     • Fredericksburg High School varsity football will not play tonight. They have a bye this week.

      • Fredericksburg High School volleyball will host Boerne tonight in the FHS Gym. The freshmen will play at 5 p.m., the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

      • The FHS varsity tennis team will host Wimberley on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

     • FHS cross country teams traveled to Mason on Wednesday to compete in the Mason Invitational. All three of the Billies teams — the boys, varsity girls and junior varsity girls — finished in first place in their divisions.
 
      • Harper High School varsity football will host Mason tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • Harper volleyball is hosting Utopia tonight. The JV plays at 4 p.m. and the varsity will play at 5 p.m.

      • Heritage High School football will be on the road to play Rochelle tonight at 7:30 p.m.
