Average wages in Fredericksburg are on par with state averages, but housing costs eat into employee pay significantly, according to results of a Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce wage and benefits study released Tuesday.

Average hourly wage was $15.23 per hour, with construction trades leading all industries in pay scale at an average $19.05 per hour. Food service and wine-related service jobs were on the low end of the scale of those responding at an average $11.95 per hour.

“I hope this is relevant data so employers can see where they are in comparison to the market,” said Penny C. McBride, executive director and CEO of the chamber. “I’ve spoken with a few employers who have seen it and said it was very useful to them. I’m not sure if that will translate into specific changes.”

Ninety-one Gillespie County business owners or managers took part in the blind survey. Data was collected using an online survey website.

McBride said there was a mix of salaried and hourly wages, but salaries were calculated into an hourly format for clearer comparison. From there, McBride used a simple average to determine findings.

Findings

Employers’ annual revenues ranged from less than $500,000 to more than $5 million. Around 78 percent had revenues of $3 million or less.
