Daily Update for Aug. 8 and the Weekend

News

     • Fredericksburg Elementary School will release class lists for the 2014-2015 school year today at 9 a.m. Parents can call or stop by the school after 9 a.m. to see their child’s classroom.

      • Registration for students new to the Fredericksburg Independent School District and who will be attending Fredericksburg Middle School continues today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the FMS Counseling Center.

      • St. Mary’s is hosting its annual garage sale today and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at St. Joseph's Halle. Ninety-nine percent of the money earned stays in town and assists the parish societies in funding their scholarships and other community programs.

     • Lizard Dreaming Yoga will offer a “Demystifying Meditation” workshop from 5-6 p.m. today.

      • Cherry Spring Community Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Cherry Spring Schoolhouse and Community Center. Fellowship, “42” dominoes and other games will follow a potluck meal. Drinks, plates and eating utensils will be furnished.

      • Texas shoppers will receive a short break from the sales tax on certain items today through Sunday. Shoppers will see about $8 in savings for every $100 spent during the three-day period, when state law exempts from state sales tax most items of clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100.

     • Fredericksburg Independent School District’s Community Education will commemorate its 14th year of summer theater camp with three performances of the Disney classic, “Peter Pan JR.” Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Fredericksburg High School Auditorium.

     • Fredericksburg Theater Company’s production of “The Fantasticks” continues with performances tonight and Saturday night at 8 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Steve W. Shepherd Theater.

     • Two days of live pari-mutuel horse racing returns to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday and Sunday. Gates open at 11 a.m. and post time is 1 p.m.

     • Livestock judging in conjunction with the 126th Gillespie County Fair gets an early start this weekend at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. The Meat Goat Futurity gets underway at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday with the showmanship contest. On Sunday, the Gillespie County Race Day Classic Steer Show starts at 9 a.m. and the Lamb Futurity at 10 a.m.

     • Two ensembles will be featured at the Dialogues and Dances concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Hill Country University Center. Included on the program will be the Summer Workshop Ensemble and the Avenue Ensemble.

     • Pecan Creek Club/Community Center will hold its next meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the community center. After a short business meeting, they will play “42” dominoes along with “Hi 5” card games. Members are asked to bring sandwiches or desserts to share, and drinks of their choice.

 
Sports 

     • Fredericksburg High School volleyball teams will play their first scrimmages of the season today when they face Wimberley and San Marcos starting at 11:10 a.m. in Wimberley. Fredericksburg will then host a four-way scrimmage on Saturday against Hondo, Marble Falls and Uvalde from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
