PARENTAL SUPPORT – Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 candidates had familiar faces out stumping for them during the first day of early voting Tuesday at the Gillespie County Courthouse. Betty Hickman, mother of candidate J.D. Hickman, and Jerry McLeod, father of candidate Debbi McCurdy, were both holding signs for their favored candidates on the sidewalk. Another sign from an anti-incumbent group read “If they’re in, they’re out,” placed by supporters of Matt McCall, a challenger to longtime Dist. 21 Congressman Lamar Smith. – Standard-Radio Post/Ken Esten Cooke

Early voting began Tuesday at the Gillespie County Courthouse, and there was “steady” turnout preceding the March 4 political primary elections.

Gillespie County Clerk Mary Lynn Rusche, who also is on this year’s ballot, said first-day totals were 95 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

Including mail-in requests, the county has recorded 501 Republicans and 21 Democratic ballots turned in.

“We weren’t overrun, but there was a steady turnout of voters throughout the day,” Rusche said.

Voters were greeted by activists holding signs, some supporting local candidates and others advocating turnover of sitting office-holders.
