National Museum of the Pacific War will host its annual Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, in the Memorial Courtyard.
The museum is at 340 East Main Street. This observance, free and open to the public, honors all of those who have lost their lives serving in the United States armed forces.
Keynote speaker for the event will be Dennis Blocker.
Born into an Air Force family, Blocker traveled the globe and attended Department of Defense schools.
Because of this background, he developed a love of country and appreciation of the military.
Blocker has worked in San Antonio emergency rooms for the past 17 years as a medic. Twelve of those years were in a level one trauma center.
While off duty, he pursued another quest involving his own family, which brought him into a close involvement with this museum.
The discovery on the fly leaf of a book of the name of the vessel his grandfather served on, LCI-449, began the process.
Through research, Blocker found that his grandfather had been on “a harrowing and tragic mission” at Iwo Jima.
