Fredericksburg City Council on Monday voted 4-1 to deny the Texas Historical Commission’s (representing the Admiral Nimitz Foundation) request to waive building and development fees.

Council member Gary Neffendorf voted against the denial.

The $14,757.82 in waivers requested by the Admiral Nimitz Foundation dealt with electrical support and water and sewer impact fees in both phases of the current project to update the Pacific Combat Zone Reenactment Battlefield and surrounding buildings.

“I’m really leery about setting a precedence for this type of assistance when we have a lot of other really good organizations in the community that could benefit from this,” Mayor Linda Langerhans said.

The city has waived fees for the new Gillespie County Jail and the Texas Rangers Heritage Center projects, according to Brian Jordan, director of development services.

The city helped fund the Texas Rangers Heritage Center because they owned part of the land and they funded the jail because they are part owners of the building, Jordan said.

“As far as any other projects, whether it be the county, the school district, any of the churches, any of the other nonprofits, we have not done (waived) anything,” Jordan said.

Joe Cavanaugh, museum director, said he recalled the city funding a previous project for the museum before the motion was put to a vote.

Gary Hunter, representing the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, requested $3,775 from the council in order to help cover some of the costs for the restoration of the inside of the historic church located at 520 East Main Street.

“Right now, everything is kind of at a standstill and until we can get enough money for the electrician to do his part, we can’t finish putting up the wall and do some of the other things that need to be done,” Hunter said.
