Daily Update for Sept. 4 and the Weekend

      • The first meeting of the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) and MOMSnext this school year is from 9:30-11:30 a.m. today. Members meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Friday of every month during the school year, at First Baptist Church. Breakfast and childcare are provided. Registration will be available on-site. 

      • A number of galleries will be offering special events today as part of the First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg celebration. Participating galleries will feature demonstrations, art talks, receptions, visits with the artists and more. Gallery hours will vary. For more information and the latest news from participating galleries, visit www.FFAWF.com.

      • Willow City Community Club meets at 6:45 p.m. tonight at the Willow City School Building/Community Center. Members are encouraged to bring finger foods and snacks for the light meal served at the beginning of the meeting. A short business meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by games of “42” dominoes and socializing.

      • The Commemorative Air Force will showcase World War II aircraft, today through Monday at the Gillespie County Airport. Beginning each day at 10 a.m., Saturday through Monday, the public can visit the aircraft and for an admission fee can take walk-through tours that include commentary from crew members. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 or $20 for a family of up to five members. World War II veterans and active duty service men and women with military ID may tour for free. The public will also get the chance to ride in the bombers and trainers. Flights on the trainers begin at $75; flights in the bombers start at $450.

      • The Texas Rangers Heritage Center opened to the public this week and will host several events throughout September. The center will hold its first chuck wagon dinner show and cowboy breakfast Saturday. All evening shows will feature Duke Davis and Buckshot doing classic cowboy music, cowboy poetry and family entertainment while all breakfast shows will have Davis performing solo. All Sunday cowboy breakfasts will also include cowboy church.  Prices for dinner shows are $25 for ages 12 and over, $10 for ages 7-12 with kids six and under free. Breakfast show prices are $12.50 for 12 and over, $7.50 for ages 7-12 with kids six and under free. The shows will run until Thanksgiving weekend.

      • The Harper Community Park Association will celebrate its 51st Annual Harper Frontier Day on Saturday. This year’s event kicks off at 6 p.m. tonight with Open Draw Pot Team Roping. Draw three for $150 per man, and roping will immediately follow barrel racing. On Saturday, action continues at 9 a.m. with the rodeo slack. Activities throughout the day will include Pioneer Museum tours, 42 dominoes tournament, kid fishing contest, washer pitching contest, and Little Miss/Mister Harper contest. The parade begins at 5 p.m. followed by a barbecue meal by donation at 6 p.m. The Lester Meier Open Rodeo will begin at 8 p.m., followed by a 9 p.m. dance featuring the band “Country From the Heart.”

      • Fried catfish and all the trimmings will be served up in Doss Saturday evening when the Doss Volunteer Fire Department hosts its 32nd annual benefit fish fry. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. at the DVFD’s new fire station located at 14500 Ranch Road 783 North. The cost of the meal is by donation. During the evening, Dutch Treat will be providing the music. Along with the fish dinner will be a prize drawing for a grand prize and more than 90 other prizes.

      • The Crabapple Community Club will have their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Games of “42” dominoes will be played, followed by a short business meeting.

Sports

      • Fredericksburg High School varsity football will be on the road tonight to play Austin Travis at 7:30 p.m.

      • The FHS varsity volleyball team won all three of its games on Thursday at the Hays High School Rebel Bash and will advance to the gold division pool play on Saturday. The Billies play Wimberley at 9 a.m. and Austin Hyde Park Baptist at 11 a.m. Bracket play will follow starting at 1 p.m.

      • The FHS JV and freshmen volleyball teams will continue play in the Dripping Springs Tournament on Saturday.

      • FHS cross country competed in the Mason Cross Country Meet on Wednesday afternoon. The varsity girls and varsity boys both finished first while the JV girls were second and the JV boys were fourth among all boys' teams.

      • FHS tennis defeated Marble Falls, 10-0 (19-0), on Thursday in Fredericksburg.

      • Harper High School varsity football will travel to San Saba tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game.

      • Harper volleyball will play Knippa tonight.

      • Heritage High School football will host Austin Hill Country here tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • Heritage volleyball will continue play in the Sonora Varsity Tournament on Saturday. 

      • The Heritage cross country team will participate in the Pedernales Team run and picnic on Saturday.

      • St. Mary's football will play OLPH on Saturday night at St. Mary's at 7 p.m. It is also Parents' Night.
