Misión de Candelilla’s eighth annual Fiesta fundraiser this weekend will feature a guest speaker who knows about overcoming tough times.
John and Peggy Benson will chair the event, which will be Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Oak Hills Church at 224 FM 2093 (Tivydale Road).
Following the 6-7 p.m. social hour and silent auction, the dinner and program will be from 7-9 p.m. This is the ministry’s main fundraiser.
Proceeds from the event will go to help fund mission trips into the nine villages in northern Mexico where Misión de Candelilla performs medical missions, service projects and preaches the gospel.
Keynote speaker will be Staff Sgt. Shilo Harris, U.S. Army veteran and Wounded Warrior activist.
Wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) in 2007 while serving in the 10th Mountain Division in his second deployment in the Army, Harris sustained third-degree burns over 35 percent of his body and lost his ears, the tip of his nose and three fingers.
Harris will talk about his war experiences, his recovery from injuries, veteran awareness and will encourage people to serve others.
