General season fires off for white tail on Saturday

By Joshua McKinney —

Big game hunters in Gillespie County can finally dust off the rifles and hit the fields.

General season hunting season begins Saturday, Nov. 7 and despite a forecast for a wet weekend, hunters should be ready to take aim.

“It’s supposed to rain this weekend but hunters are ready for the season to start,” said Sam Harris, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden in Gillespie County. “They’ll be out there, for sure.”

Anticipated cold fronts later in the season, combined with the readily available food supply earlier in the spring should make the season “fantastic,” and help fatten the deer and support antler growth, according to Steve Lightfoot, a news media contact at TPWD.

“I think the recent rains we have should bolster some of the cold weather levels deer depend on later in the season,” Lightfoot said. “It might make things harder for hunters who depend on deer feeders.”

Deer harvested during archery-only and youth-only hunting seasons have already raised expectations for the season.

Harris has seen several “typical Hill Country deer” so far, with antler growth better than past years.

“From what we’re seeing, the deer are what we anticipated for the season,” Lightfoot said. “It should be awesome.”

This season’s bag limit is five deer, and no more than two bucks, for all seasons combined.

Turkey and duck season

Turkey season, along with duck season, also begins on Saturday.

Harris said a lot of turkeys will be available for hunters due to good hatchings over the past few years.

The bag limit for turkey in the aggregate is four of either sex, of which no more than one can be an Eastern Turkey.

Music Club to host Albert, Gage performance

The Austin-based vocal-musician team of Christine Albert and Chris Gage will perform Sunday, Nov. 15, in the third of eight 2015-2016 concert season performances hosted by the Fredericksburg Music Club (FMC).

Set for 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 North Llano Street, the concert is free although goodwill offerings are welcome.

    Seating begins at 2:30 p.m. on a first-come basis.

For Sunday’s concert, Albert and Gage will be accompanied by David Carroll and Chip Dolan.

“They can rock, boogie, swing, trot down country roads and stride down sophisticated boulevards and make it all sound as it should: like parts of a unified whole rather than a mishmash of different styles,” the Houston Press wrote, adding, “Albert and Gage have global class, musicality and charm. You can’t ask for more than that.”

A journeyman musician and South Dakota native who began his career at age 15, Gage started out in the late-70s and early-80s leading the Midwestern country-swing Red Willow Band.

He then spent the next eight years playing piano with guitar virtuoso and country star Roy Clark that included appearances on “Hee Haw,” “The Tonight Show” and “The Grand Ole Opry.”

Following a move to Austin in 1991 for a commute to San Antonio to become musical director for the Fiesta Texas theme park, Gage became band leader for West Texas country singer/songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

In addition, he carved out his own place on the Austin scene as an in-demand session player, accompanist and producer.

Die Künstler (the artists) von Fredericksburg donated $500 to the Fredericksburg Middle School (FMS) art department and an etching press was purchased with the funds.

“We wanted to help kids at the middle school level get involved in art,” Donna Lafferty, Die Künstler von Fredericksburg president said. “We believe in the preservation of education opportunities to the city.”

The press is a Blick Econo Etch Model II. The machine weighs in at 67 pounds and was manufactured in Brazil.

FMS art teacher Paige Conn said her art III (eighth grade) students have been using the press to design art that will be used for cards for the Fredericksburg Dog Park Association (FDPA).

The press is currently free-moving, but Conn says they plan to bolt it to a table.

Die Künstler currently has 110 members in the group, Lafferty said, and they’ve worked with other non-profits this year, including Willow City School, Fredericksburg Theater Company and Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

Die Künstler focuses on art students of all ages and they offer a scholarship fund for high school seniors who are seeking a degree in an art-related field, Lafferty said.

'Ocean's Eleven' teachers learn education ropes

During a meeting in Fredericksburg Independent School District’s new teacher mentoring program, designed to get new teachers acclimated with their jobs, Michelle Willis and Jason Younts roll play in a skit. Willis (the parent) explains to Younts (the band teacher) how her daughter would like to quit band. Younts explains his side, as new teachers learn how to conduct a “win-win” parent conference. Observing are (background, from left) Jordan Berry, Deanna Voltin and Michael Langford. — Standard-Radio Post/Richard Zowie

    By Richard Zowie —

When Deanna Voltin was in second grade, she adored her teacher.

“I loved her,” Voltin said. “She was amazing. She was a first-year teacher. I came home one day and said I was going to become a teacher, and since I was eight years old, I’ve wanted to be a teacher.”

Voltin, now a first grade self-contained teacher (she teaches all subjects) at Fredericksburg Elementary School, is one of 11 first-year teachers in Fredericksburg Independent School District’s new teacher mentoring program.

Dubbed “Ocean’s Eleven” due to their size and number that corresponds with the Frank Sinatra and George Clooney casino heist movies, these new teachers have met three times this semester and will meet three more times in the spring.

This is the second year for the new teacher mentoring program.

“First-year teachers have good training from their universities and programs but can sometimes get overwhelmed with all of the ‘small’ details that teachers have to perform at their campuses,” said Donnie Finn, FISD assistant superintendent for operations and personnel.

In the new teacher program, they pair each beginning teacher with an experienced teacher at their campus. The new teachers meet with their mentors one on one.

“We provided a checklist for them to go over each month and also allow the beginning teacher to observe other good teachers in the district,” Finn said. “It has helped the beginning teacher to have this ‘buddy’ with whom to share their successes and failures and bounce ideas off of.”

    How teaching has been

Though she’s always wanted to teach, working long hours has been the biggest surprise for Voltin.

“I work a lot longer days than I ever imagined,” she said.

D.A. curry to retire after current term

    $
    0
    0

Longtime 216th District Attorney E. Bruce Curry has announced he will retire when his current term ends in late 2016.

Curry is the longest-serving active district attorney in the state of Texas, encompassing 254 counties and over 450 judicial districts.

Curry has served as district attorney for the past 31 years, representing the State of Texas in Gillespie, Kerr, Kendall and Bandera counties.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as district attorney over the past three decades,” Curry said. “There obviously have been many changes within the district, as well as the criminal justice system itself during this period of time. However, the underlying responsibility of prosecuting felony cases in the district has remained constant.”

The district served by Curry’s office began with the four counties, but redistricting by the Texas Legislature in 2013 moved Bandera County to the 198th Judicial District and legislation passed last May created a new judicial district for Kendall County only beginning in January 2017.

“I am very proud of my staff, both past and present, as I believe the record reflects that our office has consistently represented the constituents in this district effectively,” Curry said.

A graduate of the University of Texas and the UT School of Law, Curry has been licensed to practice law in Texas since 1972. He served as Justice of the Peace in Pct. 1 and also served as the municipal judge for the City of Kerrville before being elected district attorney in 1984.

The Gillespie County Wild Game Dinner is back for its ninth year at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and food will be served until 8:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are available for $20 (same price at the gate) at the following locations: Arrowhead Bank, Stroeher and Olfers and Lochte Feed and General Store, and   in Stonewall at Allied Ag Services.

This year’s dinner will feature an enlarged seating area, food court and added tents for exhibits and dining.

“Overflow crowds these last couple of years forced us to get creative with larger accommodations,” said Lester Meier, event chairman. “Of course, when you add more room, it just seems logical to add more prizes, more food, more exhibits and more fun. Our ticket prices haven’t gone up in nine years. We just keep adding great prizes and the word keeps spreading.”

Food offered will include axis, white-tailed deer, black buck, wild turkey, hog, mountain sheep, goat, elk, alligator, quail, seafood gumbo, shish kebabs, chili, Boudin balls and much more.

Barbecue plates will also be available with all the trimmings.

The Wild Game Dinner will have more firearms in the live auction and prize drawing, a spokesperson said. The “Rivalry Bid-Out” this year will feature custom painted Texas A&M, Texas Tech and University of Texas Connecticut firearms DP12 shotguns, including a 16-gauge round double barrel.

The number of bows, cross bows and archery prizes has doubled. The silent auction will have more items, as well.
