It will be a busy four days at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds when the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association celebrates the 125th Gillespie County Fair Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 22-25.
To celebrate the 125th Gillespie County Fair, a number of special events and activities are planned along with traditional events while still focusing on the entire family.
Among the special events are a postal cancellation station, 42 tournament, pig races, 5K Fun Run and more.
Among the highlights at the “oldest, continuous county fair in Texas” are two days of live pari-mutuel horse racing, a carnival and midway, displays of agricultural and home products, a parade, a queen’s contest, antique machinery displays, musical entertainment and a livestock exhibition.
The 125th Gillespie County Fair opens Thursday, Aug. 22, at 5 p.m. with free admission to the grounds.
There is a charge for the carnival and midway, which also opens Thursday and continues throughout the weekend.
A new carnival and midway is planned this year with Moore’s Greater Shows by Rickey and Jaine Moore.
Approximately 20,000 people visit the state park each year, primarily to view the bats emerging from the abandoned rail tunnel in their nightly search for insects.
The tunnel is home to approximately 3,000 cave myotis bats and up to three million Mexican free-tailed bats from May through October.
