By Richard Zowie —

Fredericksburg High School has a growing program that can help students learn skills today for tomorrow’s jobs.

Logan Minshew, coordinator of FHS’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, discussed details with the Fredericksburg Independent School District trustees Monday night.

Minshew referenced a recent $2,000 donation to the program by the Hill Country Builders Association’s Wine Country Division.

“You should’ve seen the looks on the students’ faces when they heard about what’s expected at the job, how much money they could make,” Minshew said. “Afterward, the students talked to the business leaders to try to secure a type of work after high school.”

“The major area we need to improve is in internships and in the practicum area,” Minshew said. “This will come from working with local businesses.”

Minshew added that giving students practical experience now will help them to find jobs sooner rather than later.

“We can only do so much in the classroom environment,” he said. “Once you step foot on a job site or take the reins, it’s completely different. Students could learn a lot more by being out in industry.”
