Daily Update for May 8 and the Weekend

      • Pilot Knob Extension Education Club will meet this morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Gillespie County Extension Building. The program will be presented by Gillespie County 4-H members. Club members will finalize plans for the May 21 Spring Tour.

      • Fredericksburg Elementary School is holding its annual Field Day today at the Fredericksburg High School Stadium.

      • Fredericksburg Middle School will host a “Teachers vs. Students” charity volleyball game today at 3 p.m. in the old FMS Gymnasium. Students are encouraged to bring $1 to school to get into the game. Proceeds go toward relief for Syrian refuges through non-profit organization Mercy Corps.


      • Cherry Spring Community Club will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Cherry Spring Schoolhouse and Community Center. There will be a potluck meal followed by “42” dominoes and other games. Drinks, plates and eating utensils will be furnished.

      • Voters will take to the polls Saturday for both the City of Fredericksburg and Fredericksburg Independent School District general elections. Election Day voting for both the city and FISD will be held at Fredericksburg Middle School from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
      In the Fredericksburg City Council race, newcomer Thomas Sigg is challenging incumbents Gary Neffendorf and Graham Pearson for two available spots on the council.
      In the school board election, C. Brian Lehne is running against incumbents FISD vice president Dale Geistweidt and trustee Dave Campbell in the two seats for three-year terms. Natalie Smith Bowman was the only candidate to run for the final year of the late Jerry Durst’s term, and she will run unopposed. Also on the ballot will be the $16.5 million school bond, which would provide new construction at both Fredericksburg High School and Fredericksburg Primary School, as well as upgrades at other campuses and departments.

 
      • Bicyclists will ride in the Second Annual Texas Gran Fondo Bicycle Race in Fredericksburg and around the Hill Country on Saturday. This is a non-competitive, fully-supported timed ride.The race will begin and end at Marktplatz. The first wave of the race begins at 8 a.m. with the Gran Fondo racers. Then, the Medio Fondo racers begin at 8:05 a.m. and the Piccolo Fondo racers, at 8:10 a.m.

      • And with the Gran Fondo on Saturday, Fredericksburg Shines has announced that volunteers are still needed to help. Volunteers are needed on Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LYMCHWW.

      • Albert Community Club will hold a workday and meeting on Saturday at Williams Creek School. The day will begin with breakfast tacos, starting at 7:30 a.m., followed by a short business meeting. Preliminary planning for the annual July barbecue will be discussed. After the meeting, members will help with clean-up of the grounds and clean-up of the school building. 


      • A 5K and 10K run and walk just for women will be held on Saturday at Wildseed Farms. Runners and walkers in the third annual Texas Flower Country Women’s 5K and 10K will be rewarded at the finish line with a champagne brunch, complimentary massages, live music and plenty of shopping opportunities. Both the 5K and 10K events start at 8:30 a.m.

      • A variety of activities are planned for Saturday to celebrate the founding of Fredericksburg. Founders Day will include a cemetery tour, wreath-laying ceremony, living history activities, exhibits and book signings. Founders Day will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with a cemetery tour led by Glen Treibs and wreath-laying at Der Stadt Friedhof. Following the tour, participants will gather with the Meusebach family descendants as well as a Comanche Nation representative at the Vereins Kirche for a wreath-laying ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. Living history activities will take place on the grounds of Pioneer Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.


       • A Junior Ranger Day will be held at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site at Stonewall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. During this time, a park ranger and volunteer will explain the Texas State Park Junior Ranger Program and lead participants through some activities and short hikes in order to help guide individuals in earning their new Junior Ranger badge.

      • Fredericksburg Salutes Our Wounded Warriors will welcome a group of soldiers and their families on Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon at the Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department Fire Station. They will then spend the day taking part in a variety of activities.

      • Fredericksburg Christian School will celebrate its history and legacy with an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, 3022 Texas 16 North. When the current school year ends on May 28, the school will be closing its doors after 33 years.


      • Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools will host an open house at the historic Cherry Mountain School, 2866 Cherry Mountain Loop, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. The Cherry Mountain Community Club will hold a fundraiser with registration starting at 3 p.m. An auction will be held at 5 p.m., followed by a barbecue meal with trimmings at 7 p.m.

      • Sunday is Mother's Day.


Sports

      • Fredericksburg High School varsity baseball begins its University Interscholastic League postseason run tonight with a best-of-three game series with Jourdanton. Game one of the bi-district round will be at Jourdanton at 7 p.m. Game two will be played at FHS at noon on Saturday and game three will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two, if necessary.

      • The first two games of Harper High School’s bi-district baseball best-of-three series with Sabinal, both to be played tonight, have been moved. Originally scheduled for Bandera, the contests are now set for Center Point.    The first game will start a 5 p.m., with the second contest slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played in Kerrville at noon on Saturday.

      • Heritage Rhetoric track will compete at the TAPPS State Championships in Waco today and Saturday.
