The City of Fredericksburg’s electronics recycling event last Saturday amassed seven and a half tons of household electronics.
“Normally in rural communities like yours, we get a lot of TVs,” said Joan U’ilani Meeks, owner of Commody Recycling Solutions. “Your event had a lot of computers and computer components and periphery like mouse and chargers.”
The Fort Worth-based company was contracted by the city to recycle electronics.
Lynette Baker, who dropped off an old computer and monitor, said, “You don’t know how long I’ve been saving this because I didn’t want to put it in the dump.”
One color monitor alone contains six and one-half pounds of lead and measurable amounts of cadmium, mercury and other toxic metals, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“At CRS, every part of the electronic asset is recycled. Each item is strategically and securely dismantled,” said U’ilani Meeks. “All toxic elements are responsibly disposed of, and all remaining metals, plastics, glass and circuitry is processed domestically.
