ENJOYING a good time with WWII veteran Harold (Hoppy) Tatsch, left, were friends Kay Lucas, Tom Bierschwale and Ron Corbyn. Tatsch spent three years in the Navy and was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Drexler in 1945.

An Honor Flight fundraiser last Thursday at Hondo’s raised $19,000 to help send 34 Gillespie County World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial and other memorials, free of cost.

“Although we have not reached our immediate goal to raise the required $42,000 for this community Honor Flight trip, we are over half way there and we’re confident we will be able to raise the entire amount,” said Tami King, Gillespie County Veterans Service Officer.

King thanked the community for their patriotism and generosity in supporting the WWII veterans.

Three WWII vets, Army veterans Ryland Mazur and Bill Scott, and Navy veteran Harold Tatsch, spoke about their military service.

Also speaking were Mayor Jeryl Hoover, Gillespie County Commissioner Donnie Schuch, Chairman of Honor Flight-Austin Allen Bergeron, and VFW Post 7105 Commander Jim Bisson.
