Doug Montgomery will be playing a concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.
A performance by international pianist Doug Montgomery of Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be offered Sunday Jan. 18, during the fourth monthly program of the Fredericksburg Music Club’s 2014-2015 Concert Series.
The 3 p.m. appearance by the pianist-vocalist at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church will feature a wide repertoire of selections, including pieces by Marvin Hamlisch, Chopin, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rachmaninoff, Leonard Cohen, Pachelbel, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin.
The concert is free, although goodwill offerings are welcome.
A Chicago native, the 30-year-plus veteran performer began playing the piano as a fifth grader before attending Northwestern University’s pre-college music prep program at age 15 and then earning a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern in 1976.
Upon earning his master’s degree from the Julliard School of music two years later, Montgomery was awarded the Joseph Lhevinne Scholarship in piano and returned to teach at Julliard for a year.
Meanwhile, he won first prize in the Chicago Musical Arts Competition sponsored by the Society of American Musicians (1976) and was the top prize winner in the Robert Casadesus Piano Competition (1977).
In time, Montgomery transitioned from focusing on classical music to also including popular tunes and in 1983 moved to Santa Fe where — when not on the road — he performs several nights each week.
