Both Gillespie County high school marching bands that competed at the Region 11 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Marching Contest in Hondo this Saturday earned top ratings.

Fredericksburg High School’s marching band earned a unanimous “division one” rating — the highest rating — for their performance of “Awakening.”

The band, under the leadership of Head Drum Major Hannah Cheeseman and Assistant Drum Majors Arabella Garcia and Drew Bonillas, will now advance to UIL Area E Marching Contest on Saturday, Oct. 25.

“The Pride of the Texas Hill Country” will march Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi.

If FHS places in the top 10 in the preliminary round, they will march again at 8:15 p.m. for the right to compete at the UIL State Marching Contest on Nov. 3 in San Antonio.

Harper Band

Also competing in Hondo on Saturday at the regional marching contest was the Harper High School Band.

The Longhorn Band also earned the top rating from the every judge. However, the band will not advance to an area contest because there is no state contest for Class 2-A schools this year.
