Fredericksburg High School’s Pride of the Texas Hill Country Marching Band performed its show “Awakening” in front of a packed home crowd Friday at FHS Stadium. Two Gillespie County high school bands will be competing in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) regional marching contest, Saturday, Oct. 18 at Hondo High School.

The Fredericksburg High School Marching Band, also known as “The Pride of the Texas Hill Country,” will perform its show “Awakening” at 8 p.m., Saturday in Division 4-A competition.

“Awakening” features music from Percy Grainger, Aaron Copland and Carol Chambers. The band is under the leadership of Head Drum Major Hannah Cheeseman and Assistant Drum Majors Arabella Garcia and Drew Bonillas.

If FHS receives the highest rating — a “one” — at the regional contest, the band advances to the area contest.

The FHS band has already received awards at its past performances. Since hosting the Hill Country Marching Fest, FHS competed in two contests.

On Oct. 4, the band competed in the Capitol City Marching Fest in Austin and earned the award for Best Color Guard in addition to its fourth-place finish in its division, which included three 6A bands and two 5A bands.

The following weekend, the band competed in Round Rock at the Texas Marching Classic and placed first in its division and earned the awards for Best Music, Best Visuals, Best Percussion, Best Percussion, Best Color Guard and Best Overall Effect.
