Daily Update for Sept. 5 and the Weekend

      • High winds and severe weather struck Fredericksburg yesterday afternoon. The most affected area was the southwest part of town where structural damage was reported at Hilda’s Tortillas Restaurant and Bar and the Heritage School. In addition to structural damage, the storm knocked out power to a portion of the area including the stoplight at the intersection of Highway 16 and Tivydale. Trees were also damaged by the winds.

      • The first meeting of MOPS and MOMSnext, a new group for community moms of children from preschool through school ages, will be held today at Oak Hills Church. Meetings will be held on the first and third Fridays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. through May.

      • Fourteen galleries are participating in First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

     • Willow City Community Club will meet tonight at the Willow City School Building and Community Center. Members are asked to bring finger foods and snacks for the light meal to be served at 7 p.m. A short business meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., followed by games of “42” dominoes and socializing.

     • Over 100 Porsches are expected to be in town today through Sunday for the 18th annual Boxstoberfest. The cars will be on display at the Gillespie County Airport from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday. The group will leave at 10 a.m. on Saturday for a day-long drive through the Texas Hill Country.

     •  Harper Wildlife Management Area members will conduct another spotlight deer census survey on several public roads in western Gillespie County and eastern Kimble County tonight through Sunday.

      • A landowner workshop for all interested in, or potentially impacted by, the proposed substation and transmission line planned for the Blumenthal area, east of Fredericksburg, will be held on Saturday. The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hill Country University Center.

     • The Pedernales Brewing Company will host its next Beer and Hymns from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday in its tasting room on U.S. 87 South. Beer and Hymns is an informal and nondenominational get-together that is free to the public. Singers gather in the brewing room and sing hymns with a music leader.

     • A fundraiser to benefit the Gillespie County Crime Stoppers program will be held at Pat’s Hall on Saturday.  Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and activities continue until 11 p.m. Tickets are $10. Headlining the evening will be Thomas Michael Riley. There will also be food and a silent auction.

     • Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonewall will host a Rally Day Barbecue at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The event is open to the public and will also feature door prizes and a prize drawing. Take-out meals are available at the drive-through.

     • The Crabapple Community Club will have its monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Crabapple School. Games of 42 will be played followed by a short business meeting.

     •  Fredericksburg United Methodist Church will host an informational meeting for its Pioneer Club and Kid's Music Academy programs on Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

    • Hill Top Café and Becker Vineyards will host a vintner dinner on Sunday. The four-course dinner kicks off with a wine reception beginning at 5 p.m. The dinner is $75 per person plus tax and gratuity. Seating is limited.

Sports

     • Fredericksburg High School varsity football team will play at home tonight in the FHS Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Tonight is also Parent Night.

      • Playing on Thursday night, the FHS JV defeated Austin Travis, 36-0, and the freshmen won over Austin Travis, 40-22. The sub-varsity white team defeated Harper JV, 14-8.

     • FHS varsity volleyball went 3-1 in the first day of the Hays Rebel Bash Tournament on Thursday. The Billies advance to the gold bracket and will play their first game on Saturday at 11 a.m. against LaGrange.

      •  The FHS cross country team experienced success in its first meet of the season on Thursday. The boys’ varsity team finished first in its division, and the girls’ varsity team was second. Four boys and three girls earned individual medals at the meet.

      • FHS varsity tennis will host Hondo and Wimberley on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at the FHS Courts.

      • Fredericksburg Middle School cross country teams will run in the Liberty Hill meet on Saturday.

     • Harper varsity football will host San Saba tonight at 7:30 p.m. Harper is also celebrating Parent Night.

      • The Heritage varsity football team will be on the road to play Austin Hill Country tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • Heritage varsity volleyball will continue play in the Sonora Tournament on Saturday.

     • Heritage Logic volleyball is playing Waldorf (Austin) today. The White team plays at 6 p.m. and the Green team at 7 p.m.

      • St. Mary's football team will host Holy Spirit at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
