Wreath-laying, tours, movie on tap for LBJ birthday observance

A celebration to mark what would be the 106th birthday of the late President Lyndon B. Johnson will be held at Stonewall on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The traditional wreath laying cemetery will be held at the Johnson Family Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Both the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site and the LBJ National Historical Park are joining in the celebration.

Visitors should first stop at the Visitor Center in the state park to obtain their free park permit to enjoy both the state and national parks.

Texas White House tours given by the National Park Service will be free to the public on Aug. 27.

Visitors may stop by the cemetery to pay their respects.

The LBJ State Park and Historic Site will host several activities on Aug. 27 in honor of the late president’s birthday.

The LBJ State Park Visitor Center will have patriotic decorations and everyone is urged to bring a camera to take part in the LBJ photo opportunity.

“The Hill Country — LBJ’s Texas” movie will be showing on the half hour throughout the day and the Exhibit Hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On display will be the president’s cowboy hat, saddle and boots.

The Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm will also host a variety of activities, including old-time games of marbles, tops, jacks, stick horse races and more.

A selection of LBJ products, one-of-a-kind handmade items from the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm and more fills the State Park Store.

LBJ State Park and Historic Site is located two miles east of Stonewall on U.S. 290.

Park facility hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily while the trails are open until 10 p.m.
