Two longtime ranching families in Gillespie County were honored last Wednesday at the Gillespie County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual Conservation Awards Program held at the Gillespie County Extension Building.
The Pioneer in Agriculture Award went to Harold and Joanne Kusenberger, lifelong Gillespie County residents.
The couple went to school in Stonewall and grew up as conservationists, as both their fathers served on the Gillespie County Soil and Water Conservation District as directors.
Their conservation practices include deferred grazing, contour farming and pasture and rangeland management. The Kusenbergers’ 1,000-plus-acre ranch is rangeland with some crops of oats, wheat and milo, and they stock sheep, goats and cattle.
