The man who exchanged gunshots with local law enforcement officers after a three-hour standoff at the Valero gas station and convenience store Wednesday, Dec. 18, remains in jail this week.
Victor Antonio Valdez, 24, of Fredericksburg, was initially booked on charges of aggravated robbery and continued to be in custody as of Friday, Dec. 27. Bond was set at $400,000 for the incident in which no one was injured, according to Gillespie County Sheriff Buddy Mills.
Additional charges, including the possibility of capital murder, are expected to be announced when the case goes before the grand jury, possibly at its next regularly-scheduled session the second week of January, Fredericksburg Police Chief Steve Wetz said.
In the meantime, processing of the crime scene has been completed, and the investigation continues to be under the auspices of Texas Ranger Eric Wright, of Kerrville, and other key investigators.
Repairs to replace the broken floor-to-ceiling glass windows caused by the onslaught of gunfire at the Valero Corner Store No. 980 are nearly complete, making it possible that the yellow crime scene tape will be removed and the store will reopen at its 516 South Adams Street location by as early as the Dec. 28-29 weekend, Wetz said.
