A limestone slab carved to commemorate the signing of the 1850 Fort Martin Scott Treaty arrived in Fredericksburg on Dec. 19 and is on display at the Vereins Kirche Museum on Marktplatz.
The slab, signed by the southern Comanche, Lipan Apache, Caddo, Quapaw and Wichita sub-tribes as well as representatives of the United States, is on loan to Fredericksburg for one year from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History in Austin.
The Vereins Kirche Museum, located at 100 West Main Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The stone, carved with the name of Brevet Major H.W. Merrill, Commander of Company B, 2nd Regiment, U.S. Dragoons, along with a second stone listing the participants, were placed at the site of the signing on Spring Creek Council Grounds (now Wallace Creek) in San Saba County.
