A three-hour standoff last Wednesday night at the Valero gas station and convenience store culminated with an exchange of multiple gunshots that led to no injuries, but the arrest of the man who started it all.
Victor Antonio Valdez, 24, of Fredericksburg, remains in jail with bond set at $400,000 on charges of aggravated robbery, confirmed Sheriff Buddy Mills Monday morning.
Additional charges of attempted capital murder are expected to come after a consultation with the district attorney, said Fredericksburg Police Department (FPD) Chief Steve Wetz.
Armed with a pistol, Valdez reportedly walked into the Valero Corner Store No. 980 around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 and ordered two employees to leave the premises immediately, said Wetz.
There were no customers in the building at the time, he said.
Police officers were called at 7:34 p.m. and they responded quickly to the scene, where they barricaded off much of the block to limit traffic near the store at 516 South Adams Street.
Fredericksburg’s police officers, armed in protective, tactical gear, were joined by sheriff’s deputies in taking up defensive positions in front of the building.
Off-and-on throughout the next three hours, officers and family members made contact over cell phone and the store’s phone with Valdez, attempting to resolve a peaceful ending to the incident, Wetz said.
