Daily Update for Jan. 15 and the Weekend

     • Texas Tech University Chancellor Robert L. Duncan will be in Fredericksburg for a meet-and-greet with the community from 5-6:30 p.m. this evening at the Hill Country University Center. Duncan is visiting to learn about programs and initiatives and to meet community stakeholders.

      • Golden Hub will host its annual Fish Fry this evening, and everyone is invited to join the Hub for fried catfish, hush puppies and all the trimmings. The event will begin with a social mixer from 5:30-6 p.m. Beer, wine and punch will be served. In-house dining will be available from 6-7 p.m. “To go” meals start at 5:30 p.m. For tickets or reservations, call 830-997-7131. Tickets are $9 in advance or $10 at the door. All of the proceeds go to support all the Hub’s programs and activities. 

      • Accordion, piano and harp improvisations will fill St. Joseph’s Halle from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The Fredericksburg Chorale director and members of the chorale will create new melodies during their “Twelve Hours of Improvisation.”  Admission is by donation and all proceeds will benefit the Fredericksburg Boys and Girls Club. The public is invited to come and go during the performances and will be encouraged to supply inspirational ideas for the improvisations.

      • Vereins Quilt Guild will meet Saturday to discuss an overview of programs for 2016. The guild’s meeting will be at the Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., with a 9 a.m. business meeting. Then, during a “show and share,” quilters will show their creations.

      • Fredericksburg Radio Control Model Airplane Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fredericksburg EMS building.

      • Seven teams from the Gillespie County 4-H program will participate in the First Lego League Robotics Qualifying “Trash Trek”
 tournament Saturday at the Fredericksburg Elementary School Cafeteria. Team check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. The event is open to the public.  Robot matches and team interviews will begin at 10:15 a.m. and matches are expected to wrap up at 3:30 p.m. The event culminates with an awards ceremony which is expected to begin around 4:30 p.m. 

      • Fredericksburg Rockhounds will host its 47th Annual Hill Country Gem and Mineral Show Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17, at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park’s Pioneer Pavilion. The show will feature minerals, fossils, meteorites, jewelry, geodes, stone carvings, exhibits and demonstrations. Experts will be available to identify mystery rocks that any visitors might have. Admission and parking are free. Hours for this weekend’s event will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will also feature children-friendly demonstrations, displays, merchandise and games. There will be prize drawings and an hourly silent auction.

      • Spectrum Winds, a component of the U.S. Air Force Band of the West, will perform Sunday at the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Set for 3 p.m., the performance is the fourth of eight 2015-2016 concert season programs hosted by the Fredericksburg Music Club. Seating begins on a first-come basis in the sanctuary of the church, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The concert is free although goodwill offerings are welcome.

      • Local author Linda Christensen will host an open house on Sunday celebrating the publication of her third romance fiction novel, “Out of Darkness to Accepted Love.” The open house starts 4 p.m. at 2160 Hedgestone. Christensen, writing under the name Linda Kay, said the inspiration for the book series came from a wedding shower gift given to her grandmother — five 1916 prints by artist C. Clyde Squires. 

 

    Sports

          • Fredericksburg High School girls' and boys' basketball teams will all be on the road to Boerne tonight. The JV boys and JV girls play at 5 p.m., the varsity girls and freshman boys play at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity boys and freshmen girls play at 7:30 p.m.

          • The FHS varsity and JV boys' soccer teams are playing in the Smithson Valley Tournament through Saturday.

          • FHS varsity girls' soccer team is continuing play in the Edgewood Tournament through Saturday.

          • The FHS JV tennis team defeated San Saba, 19-6, in a dual match on Thursday.

          • Harper High School girls' and boys' basketball teams will be in Center Point tonight where the JV girls and JV boys play at 5 p.m., the varsity girls at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7:45 p.m.

          • Heritage High School boys' and girls' basketball teams are hosting the San Marcos Panthers tonight. The varsity girls play at 5 p.m. followed by the JV boys at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
