Gillespie Central Appraisal District’s (GCAD) search for a new home continues, and one potential solution is a lease from Fredericksburg Independent School District.
Dr. Eric Wright, FISD superintendent, discussed several options for a proposed new home for GCAD during the Jan. 11 FISD regular meeting.
His remarks were only suggestions and not subject to formal action.
The county’s local taxing entities — FISD, Harper ISD, Doss Consolidated Common School District, the City of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County — on a 3-2 vote failed to authorize GCAD to acquire property near Hill Country Memorial Hospital to construct a building. County commissioners and Doss CCSD trustees voted no on the measure.
Trustees discuss lease
In his report, Wright discussed the district’s possible options in helping to remedy GCAD’s building situation. Currently, GCAD works out of the Gillespie County Courthouse.
The superintendent recalled an entity manager’s meeting last week, where they met to discuss the GCAD tax collection contract.
“As a result, everybody in the group — including the county and Doss — agreed we do not want to go back to our previous tax assessor-collector, and that we need to come up with a solution so GCAD will have a building to give them the space to do appraisals and collections,” Wright said.
The superintendent said FISD has several pieces of property he doesn’t think they can ever build classrooms in.
“I want to propose that we offer one of these properties so they can have a 5,000- to 6,000-square-foot portable building,” he said.
