By Richard Zowie —

Following a “no” vote Tuesday afternoon by Doss Common Consolidated School District, Gillespie Central Appraisal District (GCAD)’s search for a permanent home is back at square one.

Three local entities – City of Fredericksburg, Harper Independent School District and Fredericksburg ISD – recently voted to OK the proposal, while the Gillespie County Commissioners’ Court had voted no, citing costs.

Official approval for the $1.57 million purchase of land and property on Wellness Court required approval from four of the five local taxing entities.

Terri Criswell, administrative assistant at Doss, said the four trustees who voted no each had their different reasons and questions for Scott Fair, successor to David Oehler as the GCAD chief appraiser.

“I had no idea which way it would go,” Criswell said of the vote.

Doss board member Susan Connelly wasn’t at the meeting.

“I’m disappointed,” Fair said about Doss’ vote, declining to comment further.

Next up for GCAD is a January board meeting. There, directors will discuss the next step in the process.

Properties considered in the past include the old law enforcement building behind the Gillespie County Courthouse and a plot near the Gillespie County Fairgrounds.
