
News • Zion Lutheran Church will have two Thanksgiving services today — at noon and at 7 p.m. The services will include Thanksgiving hymns, the celebration of Holy Communion and a decorated altar. • Thanksgiving is Thursday, and a large number of businesses and governmental offices will be closed. Many of the businesses will be open on Friday while offices and others will be closed or have modified hours. • Eisbahn, will open for the 2015-2016 season on Friday on Marktplatz. The ice skating rink will be open through Jan. 3. Hours for Eisbahn will be 4-8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 4-10 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturdays and 1-8 p.m. on Sundays. During Christmas break for local schools, from Dec. 21-Jan. 3, Eisbahn will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and from 1-8 p.m. on Sundays. The rink will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. And, on New Year’s Day, it will welcome skaters from 2-10 p.m. A full day, come-and-go pass will remain at $10, which includes the rental of skates. • Fredericksburg will light up for the holiday season on Friday night with the annual lighting ceremonies for the community Christmas tree and German Christmas Pyramid beginning at 7 p.m. on Marktplatz. Santa Claus will arrive in time for the lighting. All children under 12 who attend the ceremony will have the chance to enter the free drawing to help Mayor Linda Langerhans and Santa Claus flip the switch to turn on the tree lights. Also featured will be a “Gingerbread Village” and performances by Al Holzscheiter’s Brass Ensemble and the Bethany Lutheran Church carolers. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for pictures. • Three days of shopping opportunities await visitors to The Peddler Show Friday through Sunday at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Show hours are from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults and free for children under 12. Paid admission is good all weekend. • Runners and walkers will be stepping off on Saturday morning from Fredericksburg Elementary School as part of the Fifth Annual Fredericksburg Turkey Trot. Included in the event are a 5K run and walk, 10K run and walk and a one-mile fun run. The races begin at 8:30 a.m. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. and is $30. The one-mile fun run is $10 and includes a T-shirt and participation ribbon. Johnson State Park and Historic Site at Stonewall will host its annual Holiday Cookie Decorating and German Traditions program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Activities begin at the Visitor Complex and continue at the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm. • Memorial Presbyterian Church will offer four evening studies for Advent beginning Sunday and continuing the following three Sunday evenings. The public is invited to join in a soup supper at 5:30 p.m. and a seasonal Bible study following. Dr. Ann Hoch will lead the study, which will use four chapters from Brian D. McLaren’s book “We Make the Road by Walking: A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation, and Activation.” Sports • Fredericksburg High School varsity girls' basketball team defeated Lampasas, 49-40, on Tuesday night. • Fredericksburg High School varsity boys' basketball team defeated Medina Valley, 59-48, on Tuesday night.
