A local property tax increase of 21 percent — most of which to cover jail bond costs — is being proposed by the County of Gillespie. Citizens may offer their input during the first of two public hearings this evening at 5:15 p.m. at the Gillespie County Courthouse.

Doss Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its 30th annual Fish Fry on Saturday. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Doss Community Center where the menu for the ‘donation-only’ meal includes fried catfish, potato salad, cole slaw, pinto beans, trimmings, desserts and drinks. Over 60 prizes, which have been donated by local and area merchants and individuals, will be given away to lucky ticket holders.

The annual Frontier Day celebration returns to the Harper community on Saturday. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and include a 42 tournament, washer pitching, a Little Mr. and Little Miss contest, a 5 p.m. parade and a fish fry. The Lester Meier Open Rodeo is at 8 p.m. followed by a dance at 9 p.m. featuring Texas Thunder.

The National Museum of the Pacific War will host a Pacific combat living history reenactment on Saturday and Sunday. The reenactments will be at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Labor Day -
Monday is Labor Day, and city, county, state and federal offices are closed along with the offices of the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post and many other local businesses and offices. The city will be observing regular trash collection schedules on Monday.

The Gillespie County Old Teamsters Association will hold its 79th annual reunion on Monday at the DAV Hall. Registration will begin at 2 p.m. with a business meeting slated for 3 p.m. Refreshments will be available, and music for dancing will begin at 2 p.m. Barbecue by the pound will be available beginning at 6 p.m.

Fredericksburg High School varsity football will open its regular season tonight with a 7:30 p.m. game against Burnet in the FHS Stadium.

Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball is playing in the Smithson Valley Tournament through Saturday.

FHS varsity and JV boys and girls cross country teams are running in the Marble Falls Meet at Marble Falls High School on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

Harper High School varsity football also opens its season tonight with a road trip to Grape Creek. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Harper varsity volleyball team is playing in the Comfort Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Harper varsity and JV boys and girls cross country teams are competing in the Chocolate Milk Run on Saturday morning in Harper.
