Daily Update for Oct. 2 and the Weekend

      • Local galleries have planned special events for today as part of the First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg celebration. There will be receptions, new exhibits, demonstrations and more.

      • Willow City Community Club will meet at 6:45 p.m. tonight at the Willow City School/Community Center. Members are encouraged to bring finger foods and snacks for the light meal to be served at 6:45 p.m. A short business meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by games of “42” dominoes and socializing.

      • Oktoberfest opens this evening at Marktplatz and continues through Sunday with music, dancing, singing, food and much more. Rep. Doug Miller (R-New Braunfels) will kick off the event at an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. this evening. Other special events include OktubaFest today at 5:45 p.m., the Main Street Chicken Dance at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and a domino tournament on Sunday. Hours are from 6 p.m. to midnight this evening, from 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $1 for children 7-12 and free for children 6 and under. Two-day passes are $12 and three-day passes are $16.

      • Runners and walkers will be stepping off on Saturday morning as part of the Fredericksburg Morning Rotary Club’s Sixth Annual Kraut Run/Walk 8K. Early packet pickup and registration will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at Jack and Adam’s Bicycle Shop. Race-day registration and check in will start at 7 a.m. and the five-mile race will begin at 8 a.m. at the entrance to Fredericksburg Middle School. Race-day registration is allowed, but runners should register online at www.fbgkrautrun.com (click on Runners) to improve their chances of receiving a race shirt. 

      • Handcrafted wares from Hill Country artisans will be featured at the St. Joseph’s Halle Fall Craft Show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Halle. There is no admission charge to the show.

      • The first meeting of a support group for parents of special needs children will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Among the special needs are ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, degenerative diseases, Tourette’s or learning disabilities. This is a parent support group, not a class or seminar. Participants will need to arrange for childcare as it is not provided at this time. 

      • Bowhunters in Gillespie County get their chance at big game hunting starting on Saturday with the opening of archery season.

      • Crabapple Community Club will hold its monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Games of “42” will be played.

Sports

      • Fredericksburg High School volleyball will continue District 29-4A play tonight when they travel to Boerne. The freshmen play at 5 p.m., the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

      • FHS varsity tennis is playing Kerrville Tivy in Kerrville today starting at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the varsity tennis team will host Leander Rouse at 8:30 a.m. and San Antonio Brandeis at 1 p.m.

      • The FHS varsity football team is open this week.

      • Fredericksburg Middle School 7A and 8A volleyball teams will be playing in the Lampasas Tournament on Saturday.

      • Harper High School varsity football will be in Mason tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game.

      • The Harper volleyball teams will host Utopia this evening. The JV plays at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5 p.m.

      • Harper High School and Junior High and the Heritage cross country teams are running in the Comfort Invitational on Saturday. The JV girls run at 8:30 a.m. followed by the varsity girls at 9 a.m., JV boys at 9:30 a.m., varsity boys at 10 a.m., 7th grade girls and boys at 10:30 a.m. and the 8th grade boys and girls at 11 a.m.

      • Heritage High School football is hosting Rochelle tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • St. Mary's football is traveling to play St. John Bosco tonight at 6 p.m.

     • St. Mary's volleyball is continuing play in the Providence Tournament through Saturday.

     • Fredericksburg Ladies Golf Association is playing in a tournament through Saturday.
