Daily Update for Aug. 28 and the Weekend

      • Rheingold Community Club will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Rheingold School. Fried chicken, macaroni salad and tea will be provided. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. A business meeting follows the meal and “42” dominoes will be played.

      • A dinner to kick off the fall semester of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in the Hill Country will be held tonight at the Texas Tech University Higher Education Teaching Site at the Hill Country University Center.

      • The Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site will host a “Trailing Longhorn and Bison Across Texas” program from 8:30-10 a.m. on Saturday. The event begins at the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm and will end with a discussion of the historical legacy of both animals near the bison statue at the east end picnic area. Park rangers will provide an informative experience about the impact of bison and Texas Longhorns on the ecosystem and history of Texas. Rangers will lead participants on a hike through the park in order to explore its ecosystem. Participants are recommended to bring water, appropriate clothing, sunscreen and proper footwear. All activities are outside and along the trails.

      • Fredericksburg Middle School will host a Beginner Band Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Individuals who have an instrument that they are interested in donating to the FISD Band Program are asked to email Sandy McBride, fine arts administrative assistant, at sandym@fisd.org. Individuals who would like to sell an instrument are asked to email a  flyer describing the instrument, selling price and owner contact information to the same address. All donations will receive a letter of donation for tax purposes.
 

Sports

      • A kick-off to the 2015 Battlin' Billie football season will be offered tonight starting at 6 p.m. at the softball field along South Milam. Sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, the event will feature "grab and go" food and drinks for parents, family and friends of Billie players before they make their way into the stadium.

      • Fredericksburg High School varsity football will open the 2015 season tonight by hosting Lampasas in the FHS Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m. Tonight is also Parents' Night.

      • The Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball team finished 1-2 in the first day of the Smithson Valley Tournament Thursday and will compete in three pool play matches this afternoon against Schulenburg, Bastrop Cedar Creek and Tomball.

      • Harper High School varsity football will host San Angelo TLCA tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the HHS Stadium. Tonight is also Parents' Night.

      • Harper varsity volleyball is competing in the Bronte Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

      • Harper High School and junior high cross country teams will compete in the Comfort Medal Meet on Saturday.

      • Heritage School football will be on the road to play Austin Concordia tonight at 7:30 p.m.

      • Heritage School cross country teams will also compete in the Comfort Medal Meet.

      • St. Mary's football will host St. Matthew at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

      • St. Mary's volleyball is continuing play through Saturday in the Holy Spirit Tournament.

      • Hill Country Memorial, orthopedic surgeons and rehab specialists are teaming up to offer free orthopedic and physical therapy evaluations to middle and high school athletes at the hospital from 7:30-9 a.m. on Saturdays, beginning tomorrow and continuing through Nov. 7. After an evaluation, Sports Injury Clinic volunteers provide the athletes with instructions for their team trainers and coaches to promote proper healing and avoid further injury. The evaluations are free, but if an injury requires imaging, splinting or casting, such expenses are the responsibility of the student’s parents or guardian. Evaluations are first-come, first-served, and no appointments are necessary. A parent or legal guardian must accompany student athletes. Athletes must bring insurance information and enter through the HCM admissions entrance.
