For now, the halls of Fredericksburg Elementary School are quiet, save for teachers setting up rooms and janitors and maintenance workers polishing up the school.
That solitude will end when school begins next Monday. Then, halls will become busy with children moving from class to class.
Principal Monica Ward and her staff will continue to exercise flexibility as the school deals with a growing student population.
Fredericksburg Independent School District is handling this growth spurt by beginning construction on a first-grade wing at Fredericksburg Primary School.
Once completed (officials estimate in 2017), it should give FES breathing room as first graders are moved to the primary school campus.
“This plan would give the third-grade teachers more elbow room,” Ward said. “Right now, many of my special area teachers are sharing a room with one or two other teachers.”
The $261,000 renovation project will also provide remodeling for FES, along with some repaving and a security gate.
At Stonewall Elementary School, $100,000 in bond funds will help the school upgrade its fence and provide other features that will make entry into the school more convenient.
